On 3 September 2018, the Belgian Supreme Court held its opening ceremony at the beginning of the new judicial year (2018-2019). As is custom, the advocate-general at the level of the Supreme Court (who acts as a special advisor to the Court) held a speech in which important legal topics are examined and discussed.

For 2018, advocate-general A. Henkes examined, among other topics, the tax and legal treatment of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Reference was made to multiple articles written or co-written by Thomas Spaas. The speech can be read in full (in Dutch) here.
